Kitten needs a home

Neighbor Madison Gray has fostered a kitten for the past few months and is looking for a permanent home for her. If you're interested in welcoming Betty Boop to your family, send Madison an e-mail at madison.gray[at]vanderbilt.edu.

Like her namesake, Betty Boop is a bit of a dizzy dish – a feminine feline who can be quite silly. She is a lovely white/soft gray girl who specializes in pay-attention-to-me paw kneading and the occasional inquiry meow. She has an obsessive relationship with crinkle balls and is quite happy to play by herself, although she loves it when you stop to flick a crinkle ball across the room for her to chase.

Her story? BB has spent the last three months in my home as a foster kitty. Rescued off the mean streets in a traumatized state, she has come a long way from the terrified creature that spent the first two weeks behind my refrigerator. She is tentative about expanding her comfort zone; sometimes ignoring her is the kindest option. She is more comfortable being approached from a seated position (so that she can crawl into your lap!) and less comfortable being loomed over from above – although she is making steady progress, and I predict that she will continue to do so in the right home.

Eight pounds, between nine and 12 months of age, altered, completely vetted (a donation of ½ her vets costs would be welcome @ $60), good with other cats, a short-haired pretty pixie who loves to burrow under throws and blankets with you for extended naps. Looking for a gentle soul who can offer an indoor-only home.

Metro DUI enforcement on West End tonight and Saturday (Dec. 14-15)

From the Metro Nashville Police Department:

Metro police officers, including those working extra duty through a grant from the Governor’s Highway Safety Office, will be conducting sobriety checkpoints on Friday and Saturday nights of this week in the vicinity of Harding Place in South Nashville, West End Avenue, Harding Road, and Franklin Pike between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m.

Officers, paid through a Governor’s Highway Safety Office grant, charged 32 persons with DUI this week in the police department’s continuing DUI initiative using extra duty officers. These officers target impaired drivers Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. in areas with a propensity for fatal crashes, crime, and DUI arrests.

McCabe Community Center meeting tonight (Dec. 10)

Metro Parks will hold a community meeting tonight (Monday, Dec. 10) at 7p.m. to discuss plans and gather community opinions about construction for a new regional community center to be built on the current McCabe Community Center property. Many of the details, including the exact center location, have not been determined, but the new building will include a pool and a fitness center.

The meeting will be held at the Cohn Adult Learning Center (4805 Park Avenue). NOTE: The December SPNA membership meeting will immediately precede the community center meeting at 6 p.m.

SPNA Membership meeting at 6 p.m. tonight (Dec. 12)

SPNA will hold its monthly membership meeting at 6 p.m. tonight (Monday, Dec. 10.) at the Cohn Adult Learning Center at the corner of 48th Avenue and Park Avenue. The meeting time has been adjusted to accommodate a Metro Parks meeting regarding plans for a new McCabe Community Center. The Metro Parks meeting will take place in the same location at 7 p.m. Please make plans to attend both meetings if you are able. See you there!

SPNA Caroling Party

A happy host of SPNA members braved 60-degree temperatures yesterday to walk door-to-door and sing Christmas carols in the neighborhood. Barbara Lamb and Dan Simpson (pictured together in the last photo above) accompanied the merry band on the fiddle and guitar. The revelers returned to Jason and Margaret Holleman's home on Park Avenue to mingle and have refreshments afterward, including a few delicious chili recipes and some wonderful holiday desserts. Happy holidays, everyone!

Curby day Wednesday (Dec. 12)

Tennessee Cheesecake Company Free Slice Day

The Tennessean's Ms. Cheap is reporting that tomorrow is "Free Slice Day" at the Tennessee Cheesecake Company, which is located right next to Sylvan Park. Warning: There may be increased traffic on Charlotte Avenue tomorrow. ;)

I do love cheesecake and Nashville’s own Tennessee Cheesecake Company is having a free slice day (Dec.8) Saturday - Just stop by for a slice between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. at 4611 Alabama Ave. to get in on this. Its just off Charlotte at 47th Avenue North. Oh, and if you like it, they are also offering $5 off whole cheesecakes on this one day.

Curby day tomorrow (Dec. 5)

For Sylvan Park residents who live on or north of Idaho Avenue, this Wednesday, Dec. 5, is recycling day. Residents south of Idaho Avenue can recycle the following Wednesday, Dec. 12. If you're still unsure, Metro Public Works can help you confirm the correct recycling day for your address.

Star Bagel to hold Sylvan Park School Day Dec. 21

Judy Beasley with the Sylvan Park Paideia Elementary School PTO reports that neighborhood restaurant Star Bagel will help raise money for the school's music program on Friday. Dec. 21:

Star Bagel is partnering with Sylvan Park Paideia Design Center to raise funds for the music program. Enrollment at our little school is growing and we are simply short on musical instruments, and need to do maintenance on the instruments we do have. With that in mind, Star Bagel has generously offered to have a Sylvan Park Day!

On December 21st, 2007, from 6am to 6pm, 10% of all purchases at Star Bagel will be donated to the school!

You don’t even have to have this flyer! The customer service employees will also allow customers to add an additional amount, in $1.00 increments, to their bill! Please consider buying bagels for your classrooms, taking some into the office or buying a dozen or two to freeze! And don’t forget, Star Bagel has the best muffins in Nashville and is a top spot for lunch, with a wide assortment of sandwiches, salads and soups. You can also get your morning cup of coffee, or buy gifts with a local flair for the holidays.

SPNA holiday party next Sunday (Dec. 9)

Please join the Sylvan Park Neighborhood Association for a holiday caroling party next Sunday, December 9. We'll be caroling for some of our home-bound neighbors and gathering for a potluck dinner afterwards! This is an annual tradition and is always a lot of fun.

Caroling:
We will meet at 3:45 at 4209 Park Avenue, where we will board a bus to carry us through the neighborhood, stopping at 10 or so houses to sing. Singing talent is optional! This is really about sharing the spirit of the season with our neighbors. If you know of someone who would appreciate being caroled to, let us know as soon as possible!!

Potluck:
After caroling (5-ish), we will meet at the Holleman residence (4209 Park Ave.) for a potluck dinner. We will need 4-5 people to bring a pot of their favorite homemade chili. We will also need beverages (water, soda, beer, etc), side dishes, chips, etc. Please email [anna.means at vanderbilt.edu] to let us know what dish you would like to bring.

We know everyone is busy this time of year, so feel free just to carol, just to join us for supper, or come for both!
