The Sylvan Park Neighborhood Association (SPNA) is the collective community voice for addressing neighborhood issues such as zoning and development, traffic calming, safety, and neighborhood beautification.

SPNA meetings are held on the second Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Cohn School (Senior Renaissance Center). Email spna@sylvanpark.org for details.

Metro Historical Commission award nominations now open

From the Metro Historical Commission:
The Metropolitan Historical Commission is pleased to announce a call for nominations for the 2010 Preservation Awards.  Historic residential neighborhoods have produced a large number of past nominees and award winners, and we look forward to recognizing excellent rehabilitation work again this year.

The MHC is now accepting nominations for our 35th awards program.  The public is invited to submit any building or structure in Davidson County, built before 1960, that has been restored, rehabilitated, or carefully maintained over time.

Categories for nominations include: residential (single-family and multi-family), commercial buildings, religious properties, engineering and industrial structures, educational and institutional and infill (new construction located within a context of historic architecture).

Nominations will be judged on their architectural merit and/or historical interest, soundness of condition, creativity in adaptation for contemporary use, and sensitivity to historic architectural character.  Winners receive an awards certificate and plaque to display on the winning properties.  All nominated properties will be featured in an awards ceremony on Tuesday, May 11, where the winners will be announced.  

Nomination forms are available through the Metropolitan Historical Commission Web site or by calling the Metropolitan Historical Commission at (615) 862-7970.  Completed forms are due Friday, April 2.

    A 1000 cars in a Historical Neighborhood!!!
    Dear Friends,
    My name is Shirley Hunt Greer. I live at 4703 Park Avenue. I was one of the original members of the SPNA. We were excited to work together. Our main purpose was to Improve the conditions and "Quality of Life within the community and the Protection and Enhancement of Property Values". TOGETHER WE DID THIS FOR YEARS. That included Historic Richland Park and the Historic Houses on Park Avenue.
    This year a National group called Good Food for Good People has used the SPNA as a pipe line to sell in Richland Park. They have used their organization membership to blast the Metro Park Board with over 100 emails to sway the vote in their favor. Look at the article in the City Paper February 2, 2010(on the internet). It reads,"Personally, I will always second-guess whether we should have went web2(email) on this", Siple said, it may have upset a few folks, but over all I think it WON THE DAY"!!! This was sent to the Good Food for Good People group. He did not even care that his project had caused complete chaos, a health hazard or a traffic gridlock on Park Avenue. This project will let 1000 cars to take over Park Avenue every Saturday for 6 hours for 6 months. It puts a food maket in our Historical Richland Park.
    I know what an excellent SPNA we have had in the past but my confidence has been shattered by the response I received when I tried to explain to Rob Robinson, Jason Holleman and Bernard Pickney as to what this project would do to the Property Values of Park Avenue and OUR HISTORICAL PARK.
    No one can live in a Rolling PARKING LOT of 1000 cars.
