MNPD sobriety checkpoints planned for Memorial Day weekend

From the Metro Nashville Police Department:

Metro police officers, including those working extra duty through a grant from the Governor’s Highway Safety Office, will be conducting sobriety checkpoints during the Memorial Day weekend. Locations being considered for checkpoints are Murfreesboro Pike near the airport, Harding Place near I-24, Nolensville Pike, Hillsboro Road, Main Street, Gallatin Pike in the Madison area, Lebanon Pike near Old Hickory, and 8th Avenue near downtown. Typical checkpoint hours are 11 p.m. to 3 a.m.

In 2007, more than 40 percent of all fatal crashes in Davidson County were caused by impaired drivers. The police department conducts sobriety checkpoints as an enforcement tool to identify and arrest intoxicated and/or impaired drivers.

Okay I am all about not driving drunk however my question to law enforcement is what alternatives do we have if we happen to drink more than expected. Friends and I have been in a situation where we called a cab waited almost 3 hours and it never came. We called to check on our cab were told it was on the way..waited and still no cab. The options wait outside the bar as 3 women in the cold...or drive home. The is no other public transportation and we were not in walking distance to anyones house and calling a friend would have been asking for them to risk a DUI as well.

  2. Maybe designate a driver next time? It isn't easily getting home if you have had too much to drink, but I think the responsibility still has to be on the one doing the drinking to know better than to get behind the wheel.
